Gardening with chickens.....

what could be so hard about that? Chickens love to scratch, chickens really love to scratch some newly dug earth. Rules for planting, dig a hole bigger than the plant you wish to put in the ground, carefully shake the plant from it's pot, place in hole at the same depth as it was growing in the pot, fill with soil and water thoroughly. Sit back and watch your lovely new plant grow.

A nice thought but not with chickens roaming free. They consider a spot of fresh dirt an opportunity to live off the land and can dispatch a plant in no time. I have returned to find only shreds of my treasured plant still clinging to life and chicken butts sticking out of the hole.

"What, who ME? She did it!" I have learned to either dig decoy holes, or wait till they go to bed to plant. If they see me with a shovel, they come running.

There is no privacy in the garden with chickens on the loose.
